Sounds to me like neither Mr. Hasty nor the local police properly understand the Texas laws about making "new" cars out of old junk. We have a manual in NC to explain titling rules to such enterprises. My dune buggy fell under those laws and they are WAAAY more complicated now than in 1974.
There is a lot of paperwork involved in "rebodying" and old car.

WOW is all I can say.  Unique Performance has quite a facility over there in Farmer's Branch.  They also work a LOT with Chip Foose on the both the '69 Camaro's and the '70 Challenger's that are all completely redone and worked over.  I know that with the Camaro's and Challenger's they're now using "crate" bodies as opposed to the '67 Mustang that they were taking the old bodies and doing all the work.  I know that when I get ready to put my '53 Superior Cadillac back on the road, it will be titled as a 1953 car here in Texas regardless of what's going in for drivetrain, suspension, etc.    My close friends have a fiberglass replicar and it will be titled as a 1933 and not a 2006.

Well I found out last night that my dad finally bought a Mustang.  Early production 65 D code 289 4bbl.  It has been totally and very nicely restored.  I would put it at a very high #2.  It's a small step below a trailer queen but I made dad promise to drive it.

First year 65D is 68?  That'd be pretty low production.  Less than 900 that body style. But not offered 289 4v.

To be a '64-1/2 at all, a Mustang has to be factory-equipped with a generator charging system, a 170ci six (U-code), a 260 2V (F-code), or a 289 4V (D-code)

Sorry, I thought that everyone knew early Mustang body styles are 65A, 65B, 65C, 76A, 76B, 76C.  The 65D wasn't used until 68.

My mistake - thought you meant the body style; not year & engine.  I see now it is a 76A - standard convertible.
