Wow, that is hard core to cast your self. Would never even think about doing that... is it hard? I mean I never even thought that far that you can actually do it your self so to say...

Look online and you can find sources for the "sand" or instructions for making your own.
Some shapes are easily doable at home, others are much tougher (needing lots of patterns and cores).

Really the hardest part is getting the right metal and melting enough at once to do a single pour.

I've done a bit of lead casting in the past, but lead is easy to acquire and melt.

Yea lead and tin -- dad told me when he casted toy soldiers in tin/lead but thats kind of easy peasy compared to doing it in cast iron and something really complicated such as a valve cover or similar...

Cheers Dyna

PS: Thanks for the tip -- will check it out tomorrow -- maybe one day Smiley

Just picked up my latest flathead caddy engine being a 1941 so I am told.
I now have a 1937, 1938 and a 1941 example of each engine.
The 1937 and 1938 engines look very similar for the most part, but it is amazing the minor changes that are noticable on the 1941 engine and I have just taken a quick glance.

Exhaust manifolds and timing chain cover for a start and the mounting of the fan idle shaft seems beefier.

Ummm, all stock and original??  Cadillac did not offer an automatic until 1941.  Olds got it first in 1940.

Thanks for the heads up, but I think I am all Cadillaced out for now I dont really need to own any more early engines.

They are such heavy suckers to haul and load especially all in one piece. You know you have a load on when hauling one of these motors on your trailer or truck.

I think we were quoted on this site 1200 lbs all up engine and tranny.

The guy that stored the engine for me in WA had it sitting next to two Ford 460 engines and they looked like babies against the Caddy flathead engine of mine.

My buddy in NJ has a 26 Cadillac engine and tranny for sale, pulled that out of his hearse.

I need to get it listed for him in the SS mag.

I had a flathead 6 Greymarine engine in my 59 Luhrs Sea Skiff, sweet mill. Updraft cast iron carb, bronze nuts on the head, everything weighed a ton on that rig but so simple and idled like a Swiss watch.

Had to make my own center carb gasket back in 1980, couldn't even get parts anymore.

Well guys & gals it has been a while but I have not been just sunning myself on a tropical island.
I am sure you will take this in the right spirit but I got to say although this site has been good to me and I have enjoyed it alot, when you come back to it after 120 plus days it appears a little like the Bold & Beautiful!

Any ways since this a technical thread I have come back to add a little extra value to the Cadillac flathead department.
I have completed the modified timing chain cover I was working on and so I thought I would share the results with you.

Since I have already posted it on another site I will just post the link which is very easy to see and hopefully you may see something else of interest in the process.

Many thanks for now and happy holidays.

Looks nice. Great work.

What's the text on the cover say? I cannot make out some of the letters.

Never mind. I read the rest of the HAMB thread.

CADFLAT.

Thomas, you must not have read the story.   Azn

It says CADFLAT which I thought was appropriate.
