After many years of total neglect (and ignorance about them) most, if not all, heat risers are indeed in a "state of disrepair".  And now we are experiencing the outfall of this neglect in the form of hard to repair leaks and intake manifold cracks.  For those fortunate enough, sometimes the valves would stick in the open position and no one knew the difference and the leaking and cracking problems were far fewer.  Another thing that will cause intake and exhaust cracking and leaks is an engine overheat and it doesn't necessarily have to be a bad overheat.  Been there done that too.

Guys,I thought I posted this before but theses are the only gaskets to use on
anything stock or headers or anything, especially the long Eldo logs if one has
to keep using them!

Just crawl under the right front side of the car and look at the exhaust pipe, you'll see it there just below the manifold, might be able to see it from the top, I forget.   It has a round counterweight and a coiled spring (that's the "thermostatic control").   See if you can open and close it (move it back and forth), if not it needs some PB Blaster and some muscle --- might take a mild hammer blow or two, or more, to get it moving.  Get rid of the troublesome thing.

Ummm is your car all disassembled?  Check out the right exhaust manifold or the crossover pipe, you'll see it unless someone got smart and already removed it.  If you find it gut it, and plug the shaft holes as I mentioned, don't throw it away, you'll need the body to act as a spacer or you'll have to make one.  Of course if you're going with headers you can put all this down as education but forget about it in your car.

OK.  Now I know why I was confused.  You said "manifold" and I was thinking INTAKE manifold not EXHAUST manifold.  I know what
you're talking about now.  My right side exhaust manifold did have that gosh awful thing on it.  I hope to replace the cast iron crap
with a set of the new Sanderson Headers for the 429.   Grin Grin Grin

I kind of wished that someone would buy a set, install it, and give us a review.

I do have a question since we're on the topic of exhaust. Will an exhaust from a 67 fit to a 66? I found a 67 at the bone yard with a dual exhaust and they've been fitted to the rams horns. I can score the whole setup for 30 bucks! I thought I'd cut the mufflers and throw a set of glass packs on them. Any thoughts?

As far as I know the 429 for '67 only changed the intake manifold
and carb but the exhaust remained the same as 65/66.  I think they'll
work just fine.  You'll need new exhaust gaskets though.........

I wish someone would make a set or provide some data on how.

I want some on my 390.

Here is a picture of the Sanderson headers for a 429 Cadillac.
A guy on my 65-66 Cadillac message board bought the first
set that I know of.  They're beautiful!!!!

Where's my credit card?   Grin

Better than a set of block huggers I guess.  Who's going to worry about getting the last
5 HP out of a 429 anyway?  I just wanted to get rid of the cracking exhaust manifold problem
and help it breath a little better so when I put a cam in it she'll run better.  Not looking for miricles here
just a good running engine with a little more pep and better gas mileage than stock.

For sure.

I just would rather ave seen some 36-40" headers  Evil
Longer is better for bottom end torque (shorter better for higher RPMs and HP)

That's what stopped me from getting a set, I wanted longer, maybe even longer than 40"  Evil

Tri-Y headers are better for street use than Individual pipes into a Collector.
