« on: September 06, 2011, 09:11:31 AM »

What is the correct carby for my 365 engine and what is the outside diameter of the ring gear, is it the same as that for a T700 tranny on a SBC engine Huh

I want to install a T700R4 tranny behind this Cadillac engine...

Sorry, I do not know the answer, but what you refer to as "ring gear" is called the flex plate here in the USA. In 1957 the carburetor was a Rochester 4 BBL Model 7015701.

Russ

What year is your 365?

If 56, engine unit number will start with:
4X - Series 62, 60S or 75 w/o ac, w/o dual carbs,
4XK Series 62, 60S or 75, w/ac, w/o dual carbs,
5X Series 86 CC w/o ac, w/o dual carbs,
5XK Series 86 CC w/ac, w/o dual carbs
7X Series 62, 60S w/dual carbs w/o ac or
7XK Series 62, 60S w/dual carbs w/ac

If it is a 57, engine numbers will run similar to 58 on this list in link below but first digit will be a 7 instead of 8.

Of course, you reviewed the MCLC Docs section, right?

So far I now know that it comes with a 4 barrel intake manifold and attached is a pic of the rear of the engine with a couple of numbers.
Is this any help... Huh

If you are want to convert to a sbc, it requires modifications to fit the existing transmission.  If you are wanting to change transmissions, then it requires modifications.  There are are no real interchanges except within Cadillac.  But with a beer in one hand and a blow torch in the other and lots of money - anything can be made to fit.

i don't have the original tranny anymore or i'd measure the starter ring for you. i'm using one of these adapters to mate a chevy tranny to my 365. the starter you find at any auto parts house.

1956-up Hydramatic ring-gear  measures approximately 14.75" OD, by tape measure.

Bendsten's also sells a kit:
http://www.transmissionadapters.com/cad_early.htm
I like that the Bendsten kit uses a common stock GM flexplate (flywheel) and a rugged and cheap GM-type vertical bolt starter motor.

Yes, I owe Bendstens a plug. I hired Bendsten's for some one-off custom work and found them to be extremely knowledgeable and courteous, providing extensive follow-through on working out details which were above and beyond their part of the project.

Good Luck

Thankyou for your flywheel info and reference to Bendtsen's.

Good news is the previous owner of the engine contacted me to say they had discovered the original carby in a box during a shop clean up and now it's mine when I can go get it.

Yeah, I've got a REAL good idea of the cost as it came from my bank account.
The adapter is $795 and the shifter arm was like $45.
The driveshaft was $150.
Trans, installatiion cost will depend on your local shop.

Thanks Gary, I can install it all myself so just the adapter kit and drive shaft work will be required.
Since Wilcap have not replied to my email, I will contact Bendstens.
I am sure someone will be willing to lighten my wallet.
