Wow, that's pretty bad. Even down the pillar.  I feel for you.

That's to the point of looking for a good doner to section from.  Otherwise it's a lot of work.

1935 Cadillac - 1973 Cadillac Caribou

That is what I did on my '73 Caribou --- found a donor and welded in a whole piece.  Harder part is finding a good donor.

Pic. #1 shows the damage from the vinyl top holding moisture and causing the rust.
Pic. #2 shows the "new" piece welded in and and smoothed with some filler.

If you weren't planning to, you really should pull the front w/shield to get at the rot and fix it the right way.

I can say from experience, that rust under the edge WILL crack the glass.

Oh man, seeing that makes me thankful I have a convertible, although I've got my own rust problems in the lower body panels.

Ditto!  My windshield was cracked when I got the Caribou for that very reason.

My '67 Chevrolet Impala is rusted in the exact same place as your rear window.   Actually, mine is worse. Angry

I am sure that it was GM's idea for planned obsolescence.

Dang ST, that's rough!

My 66 Pontiac convert just had a small spot of surface rust; about the size of a pencil but it was dead center bottom and just the right spot to cause a crack....

Yes, it is.

And it was well hidden by the seller.

I've got a donor C-pilar and package shelf to replace it, just haven't got it done yet.

aska,

Sorry to see that! Your car looks really clean in he first post you made. Was the top replaced before? Makes me leery to remove mine... I'm sure there's some nastiness lurking there. The good thing is you can fix it properly now that it's all apart.

someone had put long ago new vinyl top at it and done it wery badly, all those chrome trims and rust holes where glued whith lots of silicone  censored  Well it's kind of good thing that we have long and cold winter so lots of time to weld it together
It was kind of expected because the w/shield leaked and big rust flakes appear to the trunk  no But i would newer thougt it was so bad rusted !

I feel much better about mine now.  I pulled the vinyl top off because I could see it starting to bubble up underneath the vinyl.
I had lots of surface rust but no real damage.  Good thing I caught it when I did!!

Looks like they used the wrong type of Silicone.   The rusting process would have started immediately.
