The reason they used the Phillips Head Screws would have been because the original pins would have been removed at a bodyworks, or they actually rusted off.

I have seen the clips installed with the self tappers, but that didn't affect the operation of installing and removing the trim.   Just use small screws, and make sure they are sealed where they enter the metal.

Nobody around here tries to replace the pins.

My '85 Eldo had a dodgy carriage roof on it - hated it.  Terrible idea.

You could see lumps under it where it was starting to "go" . . . I brought it for next-to-nothing so drove it for a bit then sold it on as is.

It's a real PITA if it's on a car you're planning on keeping long term, though.  Sad

My '58's fairly solid but I know there's rust hiding under some of the stainless trim.

Excellent work, keep posting the pics.  Cool

Automakers discovered in the '60s that carbon steel and stainless steel are actually rather far apart on the galvanic table. In the presence of an electrolyte (like salt water) miniature batteries are formed and the steel is eaten away. I have a 1950 Chevy convertable. When I stripped the side panels, you could see the outline of the pits where the stainless parts had been. I coated the back of my stainless parts with tar like undercoating when I reinstalled them.
