Pete,
I don't mean to sound rude but if you have to ask "How do I start?" then I HIGHLY recommend that you get a Cadillac repair manual for your model car.
The repair manual with tell you step by step how to do the job.  I found mine on Ebay for under $30.00.  I also bought the body shop manual too. Lots
of good information about my car in those books!

Good luck!

I agree with EZ, a shop manual is invaluable.  In this case you will need the 1952 Cadillac Shop Manual and the 1953 Supplement.  Put 1952, 1953 Cadillac Shop Manual in the eBay SEARCH engine and you will find them in both the paper version (which I would much prefer) and the CD version.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

The hardest part about working on the dash is finding that hidden screw that you missed.   curse
There's always one that keeps it from coming apart.   DOH!

And once it IS apart, you drop that screw and it disappears under the seat, never to be seen again. And, it's some strange diameter and thread size that was only made that one year.
Ask me how I know.

Not sure if this will help, a couple views from the backside of a similar era dash & speedo.
