Hey Guys,
I've got a 57 Cadillac which has quite a lot of play in the water pump pulley. I've checked the pirice of them and it's going to cost me a packet to ship one to the UK. But I see that repair kits are readily available. Has anyone had the experience of rebuilding one?

I dont know that model specifically but what is usually required is a press and an assortment of spacers and such to get it apart then back together.  Usually you dont need a massive hydraulic press, something like a bench top arbor press will usually do it.   I dont think it would be an easy job with typical home shop tools especially for something that old that could quite happy in its current state.

Look for a shop that works on construction and farm equipment, they often have to rebuild stuff like that vs. just an exchange.

Yes, that old pump has been on there for many years, but like you say, the right press should do it. I just have no experience such things so I guess it's a case of finding a shop with the right equipment and who'll take on the job.

Over here in the USA there are parts stores that will send off your core and have it rebuilt for you.  There are also water pump and alternator rebuild shops around if you know where to look.  Good luck!

Now that's a thought, thanks. I need to check out my local auto parts suppliers and see if they or someone they know provides such a serivce. It has been on my mind to find a company that rebuilds water pumps, but after a quick search the only ones that came up were in the US. At least I know I can get the rebuild kit easily enough. A good way to go would be to ask any vehicle restorers I come across if they know anyone.
Thanks guys.

Hello. I was not going to pay the $400+ that places wanted. So I had it shipped out to A1 Cardone. They rebuilt it and returned it for $42 and the UPS charges!

There must be someone that rebuilds water pumps in your area.  You may need to get the kit but the procedure is nearly the same for any pump that has an access plate.

Thanks guys,
It's good to get the general opinion on this subject, it often reveals any potential problems come across by others. In this case though it looks like a straghtforward get a quality, right for the pump, rebuild kit and then find someone with the equipment and know how to do the job. Like Ron says, they are there. So, I'll find one, and keep you posted.
Kind regards,
Kurt.
