I'm going for a front disc brake kit for my 1960 CDV. I plan to keep the steel wheels, but to be sure of the disks fitting I’d be really grateful if someone knowledgeable could positively id the wheels as stock. For all I know, they might be off something altogether different, but there were four Cadillac hubcaps in the trunk and they appear fit….

I dont know if those are stock for that car but they do look like a typical for the drum era.   What changed and usually kills you for discs is that extra big step where the valve stem is.  Not sure why they made them that way but when the went to discs they made that step much smaller or even eliminated it.

I did a swap a few years ago from Scarebird.  That is the company that sells you brackets and tells you what to buy.   I just took my spare tire to the parts store and asked to see a rotor and caliper.  I looked like it was going to be very close so I figured I would be able to make it fit if it didnt.  Turns out it did fit.  The caliper had just enough angle on the outer part to clear that extra step in the wheel.  I was in about the same situation as you.  I was told the stock wheels would not clear but had a feeling that mine were not stock.  I never did figure out what the wheels came off of.   Many makes made slight changes sometimes even year to year when they were making the disc transition.

Thanks 73 Eldo. It would be nice to try before I buy, but being in the UK I can't just head down to the local NAPA store and try some later Caddy disks against a spare wheel.

Which kit are you looking at?  Do you know what size the rotors are?   Just knowing that may tell you if you are going to even be close.

I'm following GCaddy59's thread (http://www.modifiedcadillac.org/forum/index.php/topic,6570.0.html) with some interest. That involves 12" rotors from an ABS conversion kit.

However, I'm going to be ordering a ton of stuff from http://www.usapartssupply.com and their catalogue says to call for details on their disk brake conversion kits. Figured it might make sense to use one supplier and save a little on the shipping and that I'd make the call to them armed with the knowledge that I have stock wheels.....or not.

12" rotors may not work.  You might have to use 11" rotors.  If you use aftermarket wheels the problem goes away.  Depends on the "look" you're going for I guess.  I bought some disc brake wheels from a '69 Cadillac to use for my car only to find out the '66 hubcaps won't work on the wheel.   curse

I really doubt a 12" rotor is going to fit in a 15" drum wheel.  In my photo that was a 10" rotor in a 14" wheel and it barely fits.  Im thinking my Eldo has 11" rotors and 15" wheels and there is not much clearance and that was the factory setup.  I think the 70's RWD stuff, even the 1/2 ton trucks was in the 11" range.

I did see a car at a show one time where the guy was able to attach his original caps to newer caps that fit the newer wheels.

your wheels look the same as the wheels (that i removed) from my '60 fleetwood. i bolted on a set of chrome reverse wheels that the new buyer prefered.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll be calling usa part supply in the next couple of days to see what they offer. I like the idea of bigger rotors, but I can't afford for any problems fitting them inside my wheels and I definitely want steels!
